Describe motion
From position to motion.
Kinematics describes motion in terms of position, displacement, velocity and acceleration, without analysing the forces that produce it.
What is kinematics?
We ask where an object is and how its position changes with time. Distance travelled and displacement are different quantities, as are speed and velocity.
Forces may act in real motion; kinematics does not calculate their causes or how they determine the motion. We will address the effect of friction on motion in the dynamics section.
